Dying for health insurance
Each week, more than 18 seniors aged 25 to 64 died in Illinois because of the lack health insurance, according to an estimate released Tuesday by Families USA, Washington, DC, the national organization of systems health care consumers.
In Indiana nearly nine die every week, said the organization.
State-by-State estimates were prepared on two federal studies, one in the year 2002 by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and another during the year 2006 by the Urban Institute.
In the estimation of Illinois message arrives in mid-long months of a dispute about increased funding for Gov. Rod Blagojevich of health care.
“Our report shows the inanity of our health coverage system condemns many people to an early death because they do not have the same access to medical care of its policyholders as neighbors,” said Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, in a conference call. “The findings are unfortunately clear - a lack of health coverage is a matter of life and death for many people.”
After 2006, US Census, about 17.2 percent of the people of Illinois, and 13.7 percent in Indiana, were unversichert.
During the year 2005, the average price for a family health insurance for the people of Illinois, 11762 dollars compared to the national average of $ 10, 979, after the United States and spokesman Families of Robert Meissner in an e-mail.
“Given that the costs upward, more and more people have the prices of health care,” said Pollack.
To address the problem, Pollack advises US to expand their public health programmes.
Last fall, Governor Blagojevich Family Care Program expanded, but without legislative authorization, and without financing.
The program provides state subsidies to health insurance and the care of parents for children under 18 and. Blagojevich, the program income beyond 185 percent by the Federal Agency for poverty levels of more than 400 percent.
However, last week the Senate from Illinois, for the financing of the expansion Blagojevich to cover more than 147000 people.
Similarly, in the Senate, the bill was Blagojevich funds for health care, other programs such as “All children, a large state-subsidized health insurance.
“The All-Kids programme is a pioneering programme of work, which attempts to every child in the country,” said Pollack.
These extensions health have not yet acted on which the Illinois House.
But Pollack has warned that it is very difficult for the States to assume responsibility for health insurance alone. It’s really a partnership between the state and the federal government, and remedy must be taken in both the public and private sector, he said.
